Dear Steve;
I was browsing the net today, and came across the finucane.com page; I'm a Clare Finucane, and our family somewhere has the genealogy stretching back to the original Milesians who invaded Ireland.

On your page you write;
"As Bob B. heard the story, the tipsy Gaelic-speaking priest was asked what, if anything, Finucane translated into. He said, "Yes, blonde king's slave." Then looking pie-eyed at his audience reaction, he said, "No. I mean, king's page. Yes. That's it. King's page." Bob believes that it's actually Gaelic for "middle level civil servant."

Near the top of the tree comes Cian (Kene, Kane, Cain) Finucane, and I believe the name Finucane derives from him; so it would be something like, "the fair-haired son of Cian".. ..the reference to slave/page probably comes from a mistranslation as oga/n or youth.

I believe this genealogy is also available in "the Irish Ancestor", an irish genealogical journal.. which should be available on request at a library,if you are interested. Believe it or not, the Finucanes of Co Clare are Vol1, issue 1, page 1. Perhaps you could pass this along to the Senan Finucane looking for info.

Myself and my brother are the descendants of Gerald Finucane, who is descended from ?Michael?-I forget - oops (but then he died years before I was ever born) and Jean Renwick Finucane. It is listed in the Journal that they died w/o issue, but this was just a mistake made as they were so old when they had kids. Accordingly myself and my brother are the direct descendants (First Son-First son sort of thing) of the original Co Clare Finucanes.

Best wishes,
Mike

Thanks for the interesting information. I will work to incorporate it. It is intriguing to find these otherwise isolated communities of Finucanes...I suspect a common thread, and am interested to know if you could surface more of your family's history. We'd be happy to post what you have back to the Milesians (1000BC? really?)
Steve

Really... ..but I don't have it handy.. all the info is back home in Ireland. However, like I say, its all available in "the irish ancestor" page1 vol1. I have been told that we are "unrelated" to the kerry finucanes.. ..although there must be a link!. But as regards the clare finucanes, our small family are it. My great uncle alfie was the last one in Shanaway, which was the family homestead at the time (in clare). For a long time, the first born male was called Mike, Morgan or Daniel, which makes things fairly easy to trace. If you fail to track down a copy of the article, let me know, and I can try here at Stanford.
best wishes, Mike
